Each year since 2004 we have offered a partnership driven Free Tax Preparation Program to the community. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) tax sites will be coming online in Coatesville, West Chester, Phoenixville, Kennett Square, Exton and Honey Brook in January.
LTM's VITA program works on the IRS VITA model and offers free assistance to low and moderate incomes households who file basic tax returns, including persons with disabilities, limited English proficiency, families and older taxpayers who file Form 1040 for Federal tax returns. Since IRS certified volunteers do your tax preparation on IRS provided software, you will not ever have to pay to have your taxes prepared and filed, or to have your refund electronically deposited! VITA services may be restricted by tax form and income, so please review the Available Services for more details. In the previous tax season over 600 families were assisted by VITA volunteers and more than $1,000,000 was returned to taxpayers.
Through VITA, volunteers with all experience levels will be trained and certified by the IRS in basic income tax return preparation before they assist a taxpayer. A link to the web-based training module that can help to prepare you to become certified is available on this page. Classroom trainings to acquaint you with the program and assist you in achieving certification are offered. Volunteer tax assistors prepare all tax returns and the volunteers also provide educational information about the Earned Income Tax Credit and other credits and deductions for which they may be eligible. These credits and deductions may help to increase a taxpayer?s refund amount.
We are presently recruiting volunteers to assist people in preparing their tax returns, organizing tax sites, as well as marketing and promotion of the tax program and sites.
